Doreen,

I agree with you 100%. I've only been on oDesk for a week but I've already got four jobs and have more work in the pipeline from people who couldn't use me on the initial job but want to use me in the future. And, believe me, I'm not charging bargain basement prices ;-)

I don't mind the surveillance of oDesk - if I were a buyer offering an hourly rate, I'd want to be sure people weren't just sitting at their desks checking Facebook (unless that was their job).

Elance just struck me as an extraordinarily bad set of compromises from both sides, so I've given it a miss.

Les: I don't know what field you're looking in, but your application rate seems quite low to me. I look out for the job alerts email every day and then check it religiously before applying for relevant positions. I'd also consider finding a short, fixed price, low ticket project that gets you some feedback, since some buyers can be reluctant to be the first to hire someone.

Thanks, Doreen. I was just about to post my own rant on Elance. Seeing as you've beat me to it, maybe I'll save that for another time. Take care. :)

Les you should consider posting a link to the Community Forum and asking folks to take a look at your profile and portfolio - I'm sure that you'll pick up some helpful hints! Doreen

I am rather new with oDesk, using it for about 1.5 months. I appreciate the tips that are offered by those who are veterans with oDesk.
I have applied for at least 20 jobs in the 1.5 months that I have been with oDesk and have yet to get any of them. From the knowledge gained from the veterans of oDesk I realize that I need to do better on the content of my profile and portfolio.
